Prehabilitation: preparing for surgery

Going into surgery stronger tends to mean coming out of it better. Prehabilitation strengthens and conditions the muscles around the joint before your operation, which can support a smoother, more confident recovery.

We also make sure you know what to expect after surgery and how your early rehabilitation will progress, so there are no surprises.

Our approach

How we deliver your care

Every plan follows the same clear, staged path, built around a thorough assessment and progressed in line with your surgeon's protocol.

1. Thorough assessment

Your first visit is a full history and physical assessment, up to 60 minutes. Before surgery we set a prehab baseline; afterwards we review your operation notes and any protocol you've been given.

2. A plan built for you

We design a staged programme to prepare your body beforehand or restore range of movement, strength and function afterwards, working in line with your surgeon's protocol.

3. Follow-up & progression

Follow-up sessions advance each stage as you recover, checking clear milestones so you return to daily life, work and sport safely and with confidence.

Appointments take place in our treatment room inside Anytime Fitness Uckfield, and home visits can be arranged on request, which many people value in the early weeks after surgery. If you would rather talk things through first, we also offer a free remote discovery and triage call by phone or email before you book.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What is prehabilitation and does it help?

Prehabilitation is strengthening and conditioning before surgery. Going into an operation stronger tends to support a smoother, more confident recovery afterwards.

When can I start rehab after my operation?

This depends on your procedure and your surgeon's protocol. We work in line with those guidelines and begin at the appropriate stage, so please share any post-operative instructions you've been given.

Do you follow my surgeon's protocol?

Yes. We work in line with your surgeon's or consultant's protocol and adjust the plan to your progress, rather than working to a fixed timetable.

Which operations do you provide rehab for?

Commonly joint replacements, ligament repairs such as ACL reconstruction, and spinal surgery, among others. Contact us if you are unsure whether we can help with your procedure.

How long does post-surgical rehab take?

Recovery varies widely by procedure and individual, from a few weeks to several months. We give you a realistic picture and clear milestones after assessing you.

Will it hurt?

Rehab is progressed within safe, comfortable limits. Some effort and mild soreness are normal as you rebuild strength and movement, but we never push beyond what your healing tissues can handle.

Can you help before I've even had surgery?

Yes. Prehabilitation before your operation is a valuable part of the journey, and we also make sure you know what to expect afterwards so there are no surprises.
